Towards magnetic refrigerators

U. of Cambridge researchers have developed a non-toxic and inexpensive alloy which gets colder when placed in a magnetic field (magnetocaloric effect). [Practical] refrigeration based on this effect could be up to 40% more energy efficient than conventional techniques (and much more quiet).
