Baby Boomers face a continuing dilema. Many are on fixed income. The problem is there are almost no "fixed" expenses. On this Podcast I'll continue pounding this point. Perhaps with enough strength in numbers we can build a community to work with lawmakers to control cost of living for all Americans. The feeling here at Over 60 Podcast is that there's no good reason for cost of living to take such a major jump as it did in the past year. How do YOU feel on this?

Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to, and also the content of that feed. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (see below).

Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen when they want, where they want, and how they want.

World War II Veteran and His wife a Registered Nurse

My father spent 6 years traveling all over the world.

When he traveled the United States his wife (our Mother) went with him. She was a registered nurse and could always find work.

They shared many stories for us, their grand children and great grandchildren.

Need a job after age 55?

AARP has a program that could help you find a job or help you find training to begin a new career. Many people our age are retired early and find they need to be active and producing in the world. Also many people lost their positions for various reasons beyond their control. Here's a link to an article on AARP that discusses the program and how it's helped many people to date get back into the workforce. Give it a read, you may find a whole new lease on life. How to Listen to Podcasts using iPodder
Podcasting creates the ability to listen to internet audio broadcasts on a iPod, MP3 player or computer at any time of your choosing. It is sort of like Tivo for radio. Follow these steps to join the podcasting revolution.

Steps
Download the software you need to start set up podcasting on your computer. A popular cross operating system podcast receiver is iPodder, which is a free open source program. You can download it at Sourceforge.
Complete the installation process by clicking "next" in several windows to agree to the default settings.
Launch iPodder and press the Subscriptions tab. You will notice that you are already subscribed to 2 default "feeds". Feeds are the subscription requests which will pull in the audio files that you want to listen to.
Add the feeds / radio shows that you want to listen to. One easy way to choose feeds is to press the Podcast Directory tab and choose from the extensive menu of popular and new podcast feeds. Once you have opened a file, double click on the feed that you want.
Press the green icon with two arrows in the upper left of iPodder Check for new podcasts (in the 'subscriptions' tab) and it will immediately download the podcasts you just requested. Now sync your iPod or MP3 device and confirm that your subscription is ready to play.
You can also listen directly from your computer by selecting an item in the "downloads" tab, then right-click, and select "play episode in mediaplayer". This is good to know if you are subscribing to video podcasts, which cannot be accessed through an MP3 player.

Okay, we tried to do too much with that first one. We will definitely be better on the second. I think you will find the sound is better and we will have better music interface. But the format of the show will remain. Fran and Ira chatting about things Seniors chat about. Hawley, PA is in the Poconos.

What a beautiful area to visit.

The Bushkill Falls is the Niagra of PA...it's about 30 miles south of Hawley.

The town of Hawley is a great place to shop if you like antiques.

The Settlers Inn downtown Hawley is the best place in town to eat country cooking.
You will think you went on a travel machine ride and just entered the 1800's.

Seniors and Technology

As the name of our blog indicates, we are into technology. Both of us are over 60 and it's never been a question that we are interested in emerging technology. Our first podcast will be out soon. Through this blog and some emails to friends and relatives we will announce that podcast, describe what it is and how to do it. Also the regular podcast will give updates and information intended for seniors or people planning to be seniors one day. I say regular podcast because I still am not sure how many weekly podcasts we will be producing just yet. Let me say this about what a podcast is: An audio file produced on a computer with a mic and a sound card. This file is uploaded to the web as an mp3 file and transferred to a number of search sites that list podcasts by category. These podcasts can be listened to on a computer or downloaded into an mp3 player for listening later anytime, anywhere. What excites us about this is we can tell the world what we have on our minds about varied subjects and tell it passionately and in a format that is far better (and cheaper) than any radio station. When our first podcast is available you will have a link to it right from this website. Feel free to submit your comments to this article. Ground Zero

We spent a day where the World Trade Center use to be....what a sad disaster site....the loss of lives will be remember and seeing the planes fly into the buildings forever.

All the buildings around GROUND ZERO show the TWIN TOWERS in flames....

Our country needs to build something of value where the Towers once stood...It is time to move forward with that project.

Retirement: The golden years grind

Retire for good? No thanks, say a surprisingly large group of Americans. About 7 million previously retired Americans are working for pay again after a short sabbatical that averaged about a year and a half, according to a recent study by Putnam Investments. That amounts to nearly one third of all American retirees. And Putnam predicts the trend is going to accelerate.

Why give up the links or the sun to re-enter the rat race? Money, not surprisingly, appears to be one reason. Over half of the working retirees in the survey still carry a mortgage, compared with just 35 percent of those who are retired but not working. Another factor, says David Tyrie, director of retirement services at Putnam, is the shift from traditional pension plans to contribution plans like 401(k)'s. Little wonder that 70 percent of the working retired said they wished they had saved more and started sooner.

But attitude also has a lot to do with their decision to go back to work. Overall, working retirees are well off and highly educated. Their median household income, according to the survey, is $71,300, compared with an overall U.S. median of $44,389. And they're twice as likely as nonworking retirees to have a college degree. Other survey results suggest that working retirees have many of the same ambitions that made them successful in the first place. Some examples:
